Summary of Responsibilities:

This position supports satellite operations for NOAA in Fairbanks, Alaska, performing orbit analysis and satellite mission engineering support to a variety of satellites in low, middle and geosynchronous orbits as they acquire meteorological and environment satellite mission data from polar-orbiting satellites.

Operate and to maintain all FCDAS ground system equipment used in support of the assigned spacecraft for command, control, tracking, telemetry and science data reception, and transfer to appropriate data processing and distribution centers. Personnel shall be able to configure and to operate complex, automated satellite ground station equipment from a keyboard interface or front panel, and to troubleshoot this equipment when an anomalous condition exists. “Operate” includes:

• Executing standard automated and manual procedures in accordance with specific mission or spacecraft support profiles;

• Monitoring equipment status, tracking errors, uplink and downlink signal qualities, and data transfer connections;

• Maintaining voice communications, as required, with mission controllers; and

• Taking immediate corrective action(s) in the event of an anomalous condition or procedural error.


• Knowledge in satellite operations and maintenance support

• Knowledge of flight dynamics software, thruster modeling, and satellite attitude control systems

• Knowledge and ability to adjust analytical processes to address unique situations/events

• Maintain accurate tracking station pointing data

• Maintain accurate satellite ephemeris and support data

• Maintain satellite position and attitude within specifications

• Conduct routine orbit determination and prediction

• Produce antenna viewing angle, sun and lunar eclipse reports

• Predict sensor intrusions

• Perform maneuver modeling, planning, execution, and verification

• Coordinate with operations personnel on issues related to orbit determination and ephemeris generation, orbital position uncertainty estimates, collision prediction and maneuver design

• Experience in satellite operations or mission engineering support

• Knowledge of satellite ground control systems

• Development of in-house software tools and processes and practices to reduce operator workload. Experience with coding languages such as Matlab, Perl, VBScript, VBA Scripting.

Bachelors Degree or related work experience

2+ years with experience in satellite operations and maintenance, communications security and cryptographic materials. Prefer experience in several of the following spacecraft: POES, S-NPP, Joint Polar Satellite System, Defense Meteorological, METOP-1 and -2 and -3, Windsat/Coriolis, LANDSAT-8 or -9, DSCOVR, and GOES-W
